Restriction of Hazardous Substance - RoHS

In January 2003, the European Union passed the Restriction of Hazardous Substance Act - RoHS, which mandates that the following chemicals and compounds be removed from products sold into the European Union effective 2006

• Lead and lead compounds
• Hexavalent Chromium Compounds
• Cadmium and cadmium compounds
• Mercury and mercury compounds
• Flame retardant systems based on Polybrominated byphenyls (PBB) or Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)

Echelon Corporation complies with these measures by removing the identified substances from its products. These directives affect every hardware product manufactured by Echelon, and compliance requires changing to the use of lead-free solder followed by requalification/rehomologation of the parts. Almost all hardware products offered by Echelon are now available in RoHS-compliant version.
