90 Million Energy-Aware LonWorks Devices Worldwide
(Frankfurt, Germany - April 12, 2010) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) announced today that there are 90 million LonWorks® Neuron® chips worldwide, the intelligence behind LonWorks control networks. LonWorks technology is used by OEM product manufacturers and system integrators to create and implement next generation control networks and smart energy management solutions. The LonWorks platform is based on the ISO/IEC 14908 body of standards and is used in control applications ranging from commercial building automation, to smart grid and demand response programs to remotely monitored streetlights.

LonWorks technology is also the core control networking technology used in Echelon’s Networked Energy Systems (NES) smart grid solutions deployed by utilities worldwide in Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, The Netherlands, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, the United States, and other countries.

Axelsson continued, “There are an estimated 125,000 LonWorks enabled buildings in Europe, all saving approximately 20% annually on energy use, thanks to LonWorks technology.” According to the EPA’s carbon equivalency calculator, the carbon equivalent of the savings is equal to the greenhouse gases emitted by six million passenger vehicles in a single year.
