Echelon Corporation and Barry Swenson Builder Break Ground on State-of-the-Art Silicon Valley Headquarters Campus

New Building to Showcase LonWorks® Open Systems Products, Design, and Management

(Palo Alto, CA - June 15, 2000) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), the leader in networking everyday devices, and premiere Silicon Valley construction company Barry Swenson Builder announced that today they have broken ground for the first building on Echelon's new headquarters campus. This showcase LonWorks® enabled building will be located near downtown San Jose, California, in an area being renovated for new companies and businesses. The two companies will create a truly open and energy efficient automated building using LonMark® compliant products with LNS™ plug-ins from Echelon's OEM customers. These products will be integrated by members of Echelon's Open System Alliance, a group of companies dedicated to advancing the market for open, standards-based, interoperable device networks based on LonMark certified products and the LNS control system architecture.

"Our new building will be a showcase of the benefits of LonWorks open systems," said Kenneth Oshman, Echelon's chairman, president and CEO. "Our intent is to create a building that uses the LonWorks platform to lower cost, increase comfort, and improve operation. With their reputation for quality, flexibility, and innovative designs, Barry Swenson Builder is the perfect company to provide us with the structure for such a showcase."

"The city of San Jose is the ideal location for many of the world's most innovative technology companies," said Frank Fiscalini, vice mayor of San Jose. "Echelon is a most welcome addition to our area. The neighborhood where the new headquarters will be located is ready to be modernized, and Echelon's new building fits perfectly into our plans to make this area the latest, best location for companies in the heart of Silicon Valley. It will be a wonderful demonstration of the technological innovation for which this area is world-famous."

Members of the Open System Alliance will perform the integration of LonWorks products in Echelon's new headquarters. System integrators and design vendors will be chosen sometime this summer. Echelon estimates that, when complete, the building will contain almost 1,000 LonWorks devices that will provide lighting, access, security, elevator, HVAC&R, parking, fire suppression/detection, and automatic window blind control. Initial plans call for a mixed media wiring scheme utilizing Echelon's FTT-10A twisted pair transceivers, PLT-22 Power Line Transceivers and the building's Ethernet infrastructure connected with Echelon i.LON™ Internet Servers.

"For more than 30 years, Barry Swenson Builder has provided homes for some of the world's brightest and best technology companies," said Barry Swenson, founder of Barry Swenson Builder. "Echelon's new headquarters provides us with a unique opportunity to merge the best in building construction and design with world-leading automation technology. It is an exciting and welcome challenge to us to create a building that so uniquely matches the tenant in every way."

Architectural designs are currently being finalized. Vendors interested in supplying products should visit www.echelon.com/HQ. The site will track the progress of Echelon's new headquarters at every phase of its construction.
