New CIO Joins Echelon Corporation

(Sunnyvale, CA - November 14, 2000) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) announced today that Dick Carlson has joined Echelon as vice president and chief information officer. Jim Kasson, who previously was CIO, will assume the new role of vice president of engineering standards, representing Echelon in various standards committees.

Mr. Carlson was most recently director of IT engineering for Fireman's Fund Insurance Company and director of Fireman's Fund's Year 2000 Program. Prior to Fireman's Fund, Mr. Carlson had an interesting and varied career with the U. S. Coast Guard where he attained the rank of Captain. In his last assignment Mr. Carlson was responsible for all Coast Guard telecommunications, electronics, computer systems, and voice and data networks for the West Coast, Alaska, Hawaii and the throughout the Pacific region. Mr. Carlson has a BS degree from the U.S Merchant Marine Academy and MSEE and E. Eng. (Electrical Engineer) degrees from the Naval Postgraduate School. He has also completed the course work in communications engineering, computer science and electro physics for a D. Sc. in Electrical Engineering at George Washington University.
