Echelon's LonWorld2000™ Conference and Exhibition Attracts Record Number of AttendeesIndustry Event Features AT&T, Cisco, Enel, NTT DATA, and Sun(ORLANDO, Fla. - October 18, 2000) - Echelon Corporation's (NASDAQ: ELON) LONWORLD2000T Conference and Exhibition opened today to a record crowd of movers and shakers in the world of device networking. LONWORLDT conferences are annual events where the leaders in the everyday device networking industry meet to share design information, technical advances, and market successes that demonstrate the myriad possibilities and capabilities of a truly networked world. The conference provides a forum for end-users, integrators, service providers, and manufacturers to show how they have used Echelon's LonWorks technology to improve their businesses. With more attendees than last year's record number, this year's conference and exhibition is the largest and most successful LONWORLD event yet. During today's opening session, attendees were treated to "surprise" presentations by AT&T (NASDAQ: T) and Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO) in addition to announced keynote presentations by Alberto Perego, director of projects at Enel; Teruyoshi Kawai, senior executive vice president of NTT DATA; Pat Sueltz, president of Sun's (NASDAQ: SUNW) Software Products and Platforms Division; and Ken Oshman, Echelon's chairman, president and CEO. In his talk, L. Scott Perry, vice president of strategy and business development for AT&T Business Services, discussed AT&T's managed device services that will provide local dial access to LonWorks networks around the globe. He went on to describe the importance of this relationship not only to Echelon and AT&T, but to homeowners and businesses worldwide. Appearing by video, Mark Dwight, product marketing manager for Cisco's Consumer Line of Business, gave attendees a tour of Cisco's Internet Home briefing center and showed how LonWorks products in the home can simplify our lives and provide consumers with new levels of comfort, convenience, and security. "The best minds in the industry come together to share ideas at LONWORLD conferences," said Mr. Oshman. "The tremendous turnout at this year's conference is a testament to the excitement and momentum present in the LonWorks industry. Together with our partners at the conference and thousands of other manufacturers and integrators worldwide, we have built a device networking industry that already connects approximately 13 million everyday devices in home, buildings, factories, and transportation systems across the globe. And, as attendees at this year's conference are hearing and seeing firsthand, we are just at the start of what promises to be a major revolution in the way we work and live. With LonWorks networks, all of the everyday devices around us become 'information appliances' and part of the hyper-growth Internet economy." On the exhibition floor Echelon is showing the recently announced new versions of its LNST network operating system and LonMakerT integration tool. These new products enable distributed management and services to millions of devices, in millions of networks, from anywhere on the planet. These new releases allow a trusted service provider (such as AT&T or Enel) to host LNS Servers on the Internet, providing reliable and secure management of, and access to, the everyday devices in any number of homes and businesses. Such services can, for example, relieve homeowners of the burden of managing and configuring their device networks; in fact, they can eliminate this to the degree that a homeowner would not even need to know that a device network existed in their home. This would make installations a simple matter of plugging in and pressing a button. Echelon is also showing samples of the new FT 3120 and FT 3150 smart transceivers introduced during Mr. Oshman's keynote address today (see separate release). These new transceivers combine an enhanced free topology transceiver with a Neuron Chip core to drive performance up and costs down. The FT 3120 and FT 3150 transceivers make it possible to easily and inexpensively add intelligence and networking to virtually any device, even devices in the most cost-sensitive markets and applications. The transceivers provide reliable communication over twisted pair wires at an unmatched price point. Decreased device and system costs combined with complete end-to-end networking capabilities make the LonWorks platform the highest-value device platform available today. In addition to the previously announced exhibitors, smart appliances from Samsung Corporation are on display in the Digital Home pavilion on the show floor. These appliances are the first intelligent appliance prototypes to be publicly displayed by the Korean consumer electronics giant. The momentum behind LonWorks networks as a worldwide home device networking standard was also highlighted by Mr. Perego during his keynote address, in which he described Enel's use of LonWorks technology in its "Contatore Elettronico" project. Over its planned three-year rollout, the Contatore Elettronico project is expected to provide approximately 27 million Italian households with digital electricity meters capable of being integrated into a complete home networking infrastructure. During tomorrow's conference program, KPMG Consulting will lead a discussion panel that includes representatives from Cisco, Echelon, Honeywell, KPMG and Sun to further discuss the market opportunities that smart device networks in the home bring to utilities. In related news, during its annual meeting yesterday the LONMARK Interoperability Association, an association of leading manufactures, integrators, and users of "smart" devices built on the LonWorks platform, announced that market demand for interoperable LonWorks products has helped to drive a 25% growth in membership.
