New Vice Presidents Appointed at Echelon(Sunnyvale, CA - October 12, 2000) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) announced the appointment of two new vice presidents: Rene Lauzon, vice president of manufacturing; and Minoru (Mike) Shirai, vice president of Echelon Japan K.K. Mr. Lauzon first joined Echelon as a senior manufacturing engineer in June of 1993. He was later promoted to director of manufacturing engineering and quality, managing the technical aspects of Echelon's product manufacturing strategy. Prior to joining Echelon, Mr. Lauzon was director of custom engineering at MegaTest Corporation's marketing organization for 5 years. Mr. Lauzon also managed large-scale systems test development as a senior staff engineer at Martin Marietta Aerospace. Mr. Lauzon has a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of South Florida. Mr. Shirai started out as a field engineer for Takachiho Koeki, Ltd. and since then has built up more than 25 years of high-tech hardware and software sales management experience at various companies in Japan. His most recent position was director of sales at Systems Union Limited, where he had established Japanese operations in 1996. Prior to that, Mr. Shirai worked as director of the Client Services Division at System Software Associates Japan, Ltd. From 1976 to 1990 Mr. Shirai held various management positions at Wang Computer, Ltd. in sales, support, Japanese product development, and the company's independent and direct sales organizations. "Rene's many contributions to our organization can best be demonstrated by highlighting his role in the logistical changes that have occurred recently," stated Thad Starkey, Echelon's vice president of operations. "In the space of a few months Echelon has changed locations, put together plans for a new state-of-the art headquarters, and expanded our engineering facilities to Livermore (see separate press release for 10/12/00). Rene played a fundamental part in implementing all of these changes and although he made it seem effortless, it took a tremendous amount of time and energy. Rene's experience and loyalty will continue to be invaluable to Echelon as we expand and grow internally as well as externally." "Mike is a wonderful addition to the Echelon team in Japan," said Lawrence Chan, vice president of Asia Pacific. "Japan is one of Echelon's key markets, and as that market expands, especially in the area of home networking, it is essential that we have a person with Mike's expertise and knowledge to head our team in this part of the world. Mike's knowledge of the Japanese market will be a vital force in helping Echelon meet the growing demand for LonWorks® networks in Japan."
