Echelon's Open Systems 2000 Asia Pacific Seminars Draw Standing-Room-Only CrowdsHundreds Attend First Two Shows of Series(Sunnyvale, CA.- July 19, 2000) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON), the leader in connecting everyday devices to the Internet, announced today that its Open Systems 2000 seminar series for the Asia Pacific region is off to a smashing start, opening to standing-room-only crowds. Attendance was 20% greater than expected, resulting in 400+ attendees at the first two seminars held in Tokyo and Osaka. The series is being co-sponsored by a number of companies including Gold sponsors CNA, National, Yamatake Building Systems and Yokogawa M&C Corporation/Yokogawa Johnson and is taking place from July 12 - September 7 in eleven cities across seven countries. The Open Systems 2000 seminars consist of a presentation and demonstration illustrating the power and flexibility of the LonWorks platform for open, interoperable, Internet-connected device networks for commercial buildings. Total attendance is expected to be more than 2,200 people for the duration of the tour and will represent a large spectrum of the building industry including owners, planners, architects, specifiers and engineers. "We're honored that such a distinguished group of companies has decided to sponsor Open Systems," said Lawrence Chan, Echelon's vice president of sales for Asia/Pacific. "We have had an overwhelmingly positive reaction to Open Systems from the end-users, architects, specifiers and installers all over our region. It's clear that the time for open, interoperable, Internet-connected LonWorks buildings is now." Other sponsors for the series include Australon, Axlon, Bisset Automation Pty. Ltd., CSI Pacific, Environmental Control Services, Helvar, Honeywell, Invensys, M&C Engineering and Trading Company, Samsung Heavy Industries, Telda, and Toshiba. Each seminar features a demonstration of an interoperable building automation network connected to the Internet via Echelon's i.LONT 1000 Internet Server. The devices on the network can be monitored and controlled via a web browser, yet do not have the overhead of embedded Internet-aware software or firmware. By adding the i.LON server the network, each device essentially becomes an Internet host. Mr. Chan added, "The market for LonWorks buildings is growing rapidly in Asia/Pacific. The ability to connect any LonWorks network to the Internet and then control and monitor individual devices without any re-engineering is a cost savings and benefit that cannot be underestimated. Accessing the devices and the data opens up a whole world of opportunity for value-added service providers such as utilities, telecommunication providers, and cable companies."
