Echelon Corporation Announces Next Generation Development Tool Shipping

NodeBuilder® 3 Speeds Development, Orders Being Taken

(SUNNYVALE, Calif. - October 10, 2001) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) the leading provider of open control networking solutions worldwide, announced today that it is now accepting orders for its next generation development tool for LonWorks® networks, the NodeBuilder® 3 Development Tool. The new tool incorporates a rich suite of features that enables developers to quickly and easily build smart, communicating devices using Neuron® chips, a family of very low-cost microcontrollers optimized for intelligent distributed control applications. Over 16 million Neuron chips are in use around the world today, providing the “brains” for intelligent, communicating building control systems, train control systems, elevators, security systems, home appliances, thermostats, and many other devices.

“Increasingly, companies want to add intelligence and networking capabilities to their products to make them more functional, reliable, cost-effective, and valuable to their customers,” said Rich Blomseth, Echelon's product marketing manager for development tools. “The NodeBuilder 3 tool enables manufacturers to meet these challenges by providing a productive and powerful tool suite that can cut development time in half while enabling the lowest possible cost implementations for LonWorks based and LonMark® certified devices. The benefits to our OEM customers include faster time to market, lower development costs, and easier integration with open LonWorks products from other manufacturers.”

The NodeBuilder 3 tool has been in beta testing since June 2001, with excellent results. “The NodeBuilder 3 tool will easily save developers a minimum of 50 person hours of development time for each functional profile that they implement in a device,” said Chris Broennimann of IBT, a NodeBuilder 3 beta tester and experienced LonWorks developer. “The tool automatically writes much of the code for interoperable devices and plug-ins, eliminating the complexity of creating truly open, interoperable products.”

The NodeBuilder 3 tool is based on both Echelon's LNS™ network operating system, the standard platform for managing LonWorks networks, and on a new release of Echelon's LonMaker™ Integration Tool. Incorporating Microsoft Visio® 2002 Professional Edition, the LonMaker tool provides developers with an easy-to-use yet powerful environment for creating and testing development networks. The NodeBuilder 3 tool includes a new plug-in wizard that automatically writes software for use with any LNS based installation tool.

Echelon is accepting orders starting immediately for the NodeBuilder 3 Development Tool. Special upgrade pricing is available for NodeBuilder 1.5 and LonBuilder® 3.1 customers, as well as an introductory special for orders booked for shipment by the end of this year.
