Echelon's LonWorks® Technology Powers All Critical Systems in Hong Kong Home Networking Pavilion

Echelon is Bronze Sponsor of Research Facility

(SUNNYVALE, Calif. - October 22, 2001) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) announced today that it is a Bronze Sponsor of the INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion, a 20,000 square foot exhibition and research facility that demonstrates how intelligent and environmentally-friendly technologies can deliver better value and performance in housing. Echelon's LonWorks® networks provide the backbone for all critical control systems in the Pavilion, located at Tamar, on the central Hong Kong waterfront. The INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion will be open to the public in November 2001 through December 2002. During this time, an estimated 10% of Hong Kong's population is expected to pass through its doors.

The INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion showcases the application of new technologies and construction practices in housing as well as the effects of such technologies in preserving the environment, improving living standards, empowering the individual and achieving greater cost-efficiency in local housing. For example, the Pavilion's LonWorks based environmental system can monitor air quality and automatically adjust air conditioning depending on the number of people in a given area, thus providing a more pleasant living space while generating substantial energy savings.

According to Peter Colebrook, Intelligent Systems architect for the INTEGER project, "A range of intelligent technology features have been implemented throughout the INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion. The goal was to create a realistic and flexible network of intelligent technologies that could be integrated into new residential developments, today, to improve building and energy efficiency. After an extensive review, LonWorks proved to be the only control platform which met all of the project requirements including off-the-shelf availability of commercial products, proven reliability, flexibility, scalability and interoperability."

The Pavilion includes two 800-square foot demonstration apartments, each showcasing the latest in intelligent design including flexible interior construction techniques, full wireless connectivity, centralized electrical and mechanical controls, multimedia entertainment and learning facilities and intelligent and environmentally-friendly appliances. LonWorks based products from Home Automation, Somfy, Echelon, Honeywell, and Samsung Electronics run the home's kitchen appliances, window blinds heating, cooling, lighting, and security systems.

"Echelon is enormously pleased to have been chosen for this latest INTEGER project," said Lawrence Chan, Echelon's vice president, Asia-Pacific. "The INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion shows how LonWorks products available today, combined with intelligent design, can create INTEGER-style homes with reduced maintenance costs and high energy efficiency that benefit both homeowners and the environment."

In September 1999 the first housing development using INTEGER principles was completed in Cherhill, Wiltshire, UK. Some 60 houses and flats have been built on 6 sites throughout the UK including developments at Sandwell in the West Midlands, in Harlow, Newbury and Maidenhead. Several parties are involved in the INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion including the Hong Kong and British governments, CLP Power, Gammon Construction, the Hong Kong Housing Authority, the Hong Kong Housing Society, INTEGER Intelligent & Green, and Swire Properties. As an ongoing action research network, the objectives of the INTEGER Hong Kong Pavilion will evolve from initially raising awareness of INTEGER principles to eventually researching and encouraging the application of these technologies in Hong Kong.
