Industry Leaders Converge At LonWorld™ 2001 Conference and Exhibition

(FRANKFURT, GERMANY - October 23, 2001) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) today announced the opening of the LonWorld™ 2001 Conference and Exhibition, marked by a "state of the LonWorks® industry" keynote address from Echelon's chairman and CEO Ken Oshman. Several events will round out the show, including: additional keynote addresses by executives from IBM Corporation and Samsung Electronics; demonstrations of LonWorks powered smart appliances from Merloni Elettrodomestici, Samsung Electronics, and Whirlpool Corporation; and presentations and exhibits from more than 90 companies. LonWorld 2001, taking place October 23-24 at the Frankfurt Fair and Exhibition Center, focuses on how connected devices are creating new business opportunities and improving our lives.

"Across industries and around the world, we're experiencing an explosion in the number and types of connected devices; everything from light switches to microwave ovens are now part of a connected world," said Mr. Oshman. "Companies at the LonWorld event are at the forefront of this charge. They are embedding intelligence and networking into their products and systems to increase business, lower costs and improve performance. They are creating new businesses based on these smart products and systems to deliver valuable services to consumers and companies. They are building on the LonWorks platform to make real the vision of a connected world."

The exhibition floor features an Echelon demonstration of three "connected homes" that show how new LonWorks powered home appliances can communicate with one another, and over the Internet, to offer consumers a number of valuable energy-saving and productivity-enhancing services. The first "home" includes a refrigerator, microwave oven, washing machine, and air conditioner from Samsung Electronics. The second contains an oven, power meter, and Leonardo kitchen Web pad from Merloni. The third "home" contains a microwave, washing machine, and oven from Whirlpool Corporation. The Whirlpool appliances provide a number of value-added services that are accessible using a wireless Web pad and a residential gateway that runs IBM's Service Management Framework software; Echelon's LonWorks access bundle for Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi) gateways; and a number of Whirlpool-created services designed to the OSGi specifications. All of the appliances use Echelon's field-proven, ANSI/EIA 709.2-compliant PLT-22 Power Line Transceiver to communicate over the power wiring.

Echelon's booth also features advanced information and presentations on a number of recently announced products, including the NodeBuilder® 3 development tool, ShortStack™ software, LonWorks Bundle Deployment Kit, i.LON™ 10 Internet Server, i.LON 100 Internet Server, DC-1 Data Concentrator, and PL-SLTA Power Line Serial Adapter.

The LonWorld Conference and Exhibition is the world's largest event focused on the technology and business of networking everyday devices. The conference provides a forum for end-users, integrators, service providers, and manufacturers to meet, conduct business, forge new relationships, and share with one another how they have used LonWorks technology to improve their existing businesses and create new businesses.
