Echelon and National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee to Offer LonWorks® Training to North American Electrical Contractors and Electricians(Las Vegas - March 13, 2002) - Today, at the Voice-Data-Video Expo (VDV Expo), Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) and the National Joint Apprentice and Training Committee (NJATC), the training program of the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), announced an agreement to jointly market, advertise, promote, and deliver LonWorks training classes to IBEW and NECA members. Founded in 1891, the IBEW is the largest electrical union in the world. Founded in 1901, NECA is a leading representative of the construction market comprised of over 4,500 electrical contracting firms. According to A. J. Pearson, the NJATC's executive director, "The job market for electrical workers, electricians and installers has a clearly defined future that calls for skills, understanding, and knowledge about the installation and use of LonWorks networks in buildings, homes, factories and other areas. Our job is to help make sure that the members of NECA and IBEW are valuable and well-trained professionals. With LonWorks training, we increase the value of the companies and electricians that take our courses and extend the electrical industry." "We're very pleased to be working with the NJATC to offer LonWorks training to North America's contractors and electrical workers," said Frits Bruggink, Echelon's senior vice president of sales and marketing. "LonWorks based Open Systems are clearly a de facto standard for automation systems in North America; therefore, it is very important to us, and the market, that the people in the electrical industry, the ones that actually connect one device to another and who service those devices, be knowledgeable, highly competent and well trained. The NJATC is the only organization that can offer the sort of comprehensive, national training that we have announced today." The first classes should be offered in Upper Marlboro, Maryland and San Jose, California starting in the 2nd quarter of 2002. The wide-ranging course offerings will include an introduction to LonWorks networks, network installation and network troubleshooting. About the NJATC The NJATC developed uniform standards that are adopted and used nationwide to select and train literally thousands of qualified men and women as Residential Wireman, Journeyman Lineman, Journeyman Tree Trimmer, Journeyman Inside Wireman, and Telecommunication VDV Installer-Technicians.
