Echelon Releases Residential Gateway Services SoftwareLonWorks® Bundle Deployment Kit Expected to Enable Value-Added Services to Homes Via Industry Standard Gateways(DALLAS, TX - May 15, 2002) - Echelon Corporation (NASDAQ: ELON) today announced the release of value-added services enabling software at the Connections 2002 International Home Networking and Residential Gateways Showcase. The LonWorks Bundle Deployment Kit is a set of software tools based on the Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi) specifications that is expected to allow companies to create value-added service applications that connect service providers to LonWorks devices such as electricity meters, refrigerators, ovens, furnaces, and other everyday household electrical appliances or devices. An evaluation copy of the kit can be downloaded now from www.echelon.com/products/osgi. Developed under an open industry process, the OSGi specifications define an open operating environment for the delivery of multiple managed services over wide-area networks to local networks and devices. Echelon's LonWorks Bundle Deployment Kit can potentially enable manufacturers and users of compliant gateways to more efficiently develop and deploy services that interact with LonWorks powered devices. Examples of services that it is intended to benefit include energy savings using time of day pricing, home monitoring, predictive warranty for appliances, and remote diagnostics of washing machines and other white goods. The widespread use of the LonWorks platform in commercial and industrial settings is expected to create a potential market for OSGi deployed services in thousands of existing locations, leveraging millions of devices worldwide. According to Jon Edmondson, Manager, Marketing Innovations, Shell Oil Products, "The ability to combine LonWorks devices and industry standard OSGi gateways has great potential in the service station industry. We've shown that the two technologies working together can improve our ability to monitor station operations, reduce costs, and provide a basis for delivering future services to our branded outlets." Echelon's LonWorks Bundle Deployment Kit includes ready-to-use bundles, example device service bundles, utilities, and documentation. Using the Kit, it is anticipated that developers will be able to easily configure LonWorks devices to communicate peer-to-peer for maximum scalability, performance, and reliability. The Kit offers LonMark® device support and is compatible with all LonWorks channel types including power line (ANSI/EIA 709.2) and twisted pair (ANSI/EIA 709.3). Tricia Parks, President and Founder of Parks Associates states, "The release of Echelon's LonWorks OSGi software is another ingredient in moving the residential gateway market forward. Combining OSGi's open platform for service delivery with LonWorks networks, the leading open networking platform for appliances and devices, creates a powerful foundation for service providers to offer a multitude of value-added services to their customers."
