Power Line Smart Transceivers 3120®/3150®/3170

Our device-on-a-chip 3120®, 3150®, and 3170 power line (PL) smart transceivers are time- and cost-effective solutions for delivering control-networking capabilities over power lines. They combine applications processing using a highly reliable narrow-band power line transceiver and 8-bit Neuron® processor core, ISO/IEC compliant signaling, and memory that can reside on or off chip for larger applications.

  • Digital signal-processing core with patented noise cancellation and distortion correction overcomes impediments such as impulsive noise, continuous tone noise, and phase distortion.
  • Dual-carrier frequency provides extremely high communications reliability through automatic frequency selection.
  • Highly efficient, low-overhead forward error correction (FEC) algorithm and a cyclical redundancy check (CRC) work to overcome packet-corrupting noise.
  • External high-output amplifier technology can deliver 7Vp-p while complying with emission requirements worldwide.
  • PL 3120, PL 3150, and PL 3170 Smart Transceivers have a dynamic range greater than 80dB enabling reception of signals that have been reduced by a factor of 104; in addition, the PL 3170 Smart Transceiver includes self-installation functions on-chip that eliminate the need for installation tools in devices aimed at the consumer/home market.

Mini FX Evaluation Kit
The Mini FX Evaluation Kit is ultra low-cost way to evaluate Echelon's power line technology and/or develop simple devices. You can initialize and run a power line-based network in as little as five minutes, and then start writing new code.

NodeBuilder® FX Development Kit
The NodeBuilder software includes the tools you need to edit, compile, build, and debug Neuron C applications.  The tools include the Neuron C Compiler, Assembler, and Linker, and also include the NodeBuilder Resource Editor, Code Wizard, Code Editor, Debugger, and Project Manager.

Power Line Development Support Kit (PDF)
The Power Line Smart Transceiver Development Support Kit (PL DSK v2.2) provides reference designs for the external discrete interface circuitry that needs to be implemented with the Power Line Smart Transceiver IC. Additional key enhancements in this version of the PL DSK include:

  • Expanded Reference Designs
  • Expanded Layout Tools Support
  • Instant Evaluation of Power Line Technology in Real Life Environment

PLCA-22 Power Line Communications Analyzer (PDF)
The PLCA-22 lets you measure key communication parameters, including:

  • Attenuation tolerance/communication margin
  • Signal-to-noise ratio
  • Bit error rate
  • Pure physical layer performance vs. performance with the LonTalk® protocol switched on
  • Relative phase

Power Line Device Design Review
Our review service provides valuable feedback on your development project before it's done. Submit a pre-production device that contains one or more select Echelon products and we'll analyze its schematic, parts list, and printed circuit board (PCB) layout drawing to make sure you're using our products in the best way.
