Answers to i.LON® 100 and SmartServer 2.0 Frequently Asked Questions
SmartServer 2.0 Software Installation
If I install the SmartServer 2.0 software on a computer with a previous i.LON release, are the i.LON image files from the previous release deleted?
Image files from previous releases may be deleted when the SmartServer 2.0 software is installed. The SmartServer 2.0 software setup application installs the latest releases of the image files for the i.LON 100 e3 (Release 3.03), i.LON 100e3 plus (Release 3.03), original SmartServer (Release 4.02), and SmartServer 2.0 (Release 4.03) and removes any earlier versions of these image files such as Release 4.00 or 4.01. You can make a backup copy of the old images files from the Images directory before installing the SmartServer 2.0 software to keep a copy of the older files.
If I downgrade a SmartServer 2.0 to an i.LON 100 e3 plus image or the original SmartServer image, does the i.LON configuration plug-in installed with the SmartServer 2.0 software work with the downgraded i.LON?
Yes, the plug-in included with SmartServer 2.0 works with the original i.LON 100, i.LON 100 e2, i.LON 100 e3, i.LON 100 e3 plus, and i.LON SmartServer, in addition to the i.LON SmartServer 2.0.
Is my i.LON hardware compatible with the SmartServer 2.0 firmware?
There are two i.LON 100 hardware platforms. The original platform was used for the original i.LON 100, i.LON 100 e2, and i.LON 100 e3. A new platform was introduced for the i.LON 100 e3 plus that doubled the memory of the original platform, increasing the original 32MB flash/32MB RAM to 64MB flash/64MB RAM. The new platform is used for the i.LON 100 e3 plus, i.LON SmartServer, and i.LON SmartServer 2.0. The new platform is labeled either “i.LON 100 e3 plus” or “i.LON SmartServer” on the front. You can also tell which platform you have through the Web interface. To use the Web interface, open the System Info page. The Hardware Revision value shows which version of the hardware you have. The new 64MB/64MB platform is revision 3. The older i.LONs did not report the hardware revision, but if it is not reported, you have the old one. The other way to tell is to look at the flash disk size in the System Info. The old platform shows about 32MB, the new one about 64MB.
Are the i.LON 100 e3 plus and original SmartServer (SmartServer 1.0) products still available?
Yes, the i.LON 100 e3 plus and SmartServer 1.0 products can be ordered through February 28, 2010, with shipments scheduled through May 31, 2010. However, the older products do not include a license for the SmartServer 2.0 firmware. The SmartServer 2.0 products include the firmware for the i.LON 100 e3 plus, SmartServer 1.0, and SmartServer 2.0, and a license to load any of the three versions on the hardware. The SmartServer 2.0 products therefore provide the most flexibility for moving between the different versions of firmware.
Rapid Deployment
Where is the documentation for the rapid deployment example?
The rapid deployment example is documented in the Rapid Deployment Example for EES User’s Guide which is located in the RapidDeploymentExample folder on the SmartServer 2.0 DVD.
Can a deployment template include custom Web pages?
Yes, if you create custom Web pages in the SmartServer used to create a deployment template; those pages will become part of the template, and will be deployed to a new SmartServer when the template is deployed.
When using automatic commissioning with rapid deployment, are Modbus devices automatically commissioned?
As long as any deployed Modbus devices have the same configuration as the Modbus devices used to create a template, they will automatically be commissioned. For example, if hardware switches are used to specify a hardware address for a Modbus device, the switches in a deployed Modbus device must have the same settings as the switches in the template Modbus device.
If automatic commissioning is used to commission the devices at a new site, but some of the devices were not discovered or failed to commission properly, how can I tell which devices are not available?
Any missing devices will be marked in orange in the SmartServer navigation pane, and any discovered devices that failed to commission properly will be marked in red.
If automatic commissioning is used to commission the devices at a new site, but some of the devices are not unconfigured because they were previously installed at a different site, how are those devices commissioned?
You can install the devices by using manual installation and pressing the Service button on each device.
Can a template for a SmartServer 1.0 be built and deployed using the SmartServer 2.0 deployment tool?
No, the SmartServer 2.0 deployment tool can only be used to create and deploy a template for a SmartServer 2.0.
i.LON Vision 2.0
If the original i.LON Vision is installed on a computer and then the SmartServer 2.0 software is installed on the same computer, is the original i.LON Vision retained or does it have to be re-installed?
The original i.LON Vision is retained.
Can I continue to use both the original i.LON Vision and i.LON Vision 2.0 on the same computer?
You can install both i.LON Vision 2.0 and i.LON Vision 1.0 on the same computer. In this case, you use i.LON Vision 2.0 to create custom SmartServer 2.0 Web pages, and you use i.LON Vision 1.0 with Contribute CS3/CS4 to create custom Web pages for the SmartServer 1.0 and i.LON e3 Internet Server. The tools remain independent, so installing i.LON Vision 2.0 does not add any of the new i.LON Vision 2.0 features described in this section to i.LON Vision 1.0. You cannot use i.LON Vision 2.0 to create or edit custom SmartServer 1.0 Web pages stored on a SmartServer 1.0. Conversely, you cannot use the i.LON Vision 1.0 tool to create or edit custom SmartServer 2.0 Web pages stored on a SmartServer 2.0.
Can I convert Web pages that I created with the original i.LON Vision to i.LON Vision 2.0 format for use with a SmartServer 2.0?
You can use i.LON Vision 2.0 to automatically upgrade all existing custom i.LON Vision 1.0 Web pages to the SmartServer 2.0 format. This includes all custom SmartServer 1.0 Web pages previously built with i.LON Vision 1.0 and Contribute CS3/CS4, and custom i.LON e3 Internet Server Web pages previously built with i.LON Vision 1.0 and Contribute 3.0/3.1/CS3/CS4. See Upgrading Custom Web Pages to SmartServer 2.0 Pages in Chapter 3 of the i.LON Vision 2.0 User’s Guide for more information.

The LNS Server can either be the LNS Server included with one of the SmartServer 2.0 LNS Server Editions, or it can be the LNS Server included with an LNS tool that includes an LNS Turbo Edition Server such as the LonMaker Integration Tool Turbo Edition.
Modem Support
Is it still possible to use a modem that was supported in a previous i.LON release and that was deleted from the SmartServer 2.0 release?
Yes, you can copy the entry for the modem from the connectionManager.XML file on your i.LON running the earlier release to the connectionManager.XML file on your SmartServer 2.0. Reboot your SmartServer after changing the file. Any changes that you make to this file may be overwritten by future updates or upgrades.
Is it possible to rename a modem type?
Yes, you can change the “<UCPTdescription>…</UCPTdescription>” tag in the connectionManager.XML file to change the description that is displayed for a modem. Reboot your SmartServer after changing the file. Any changes that you make to this file may be overwritten by future updates or upgrades.
