LPT-11 Link Power Twisted-Pair Transceiver

Combines power and data on a common twisted-wire pair!

The LPT-11 Link Power Transceiver, the second generation of our link power transceivers, combines power and data on a common twisted-wire pair, and lets you wire LPT-11-based devices with virtually no topology restrictions.

Power is supplied by a single, central 48V DC power supply and is coupled onto the network wires via the LPI-10 Link Power Interface Module. The LPT-11 transceiver integrates a switching power supply that provides regulated +5VDC for the device to power the Neuron Chip, application electronics, sensors, actuators, and displays. Each transceiver can provide +5VDC at up to 100mA.

Reducing Costs by Combining Power and Data

The high current capability of the LPT-11 transceiver can eliminate the need for local power supplies in each device, saving equipment and labor costs:

  • Installing separate power supplies in every device is especially expensive since it involves an AC mains connection.
  • Installing separate data and power wiring also means more time troubleshooting the wiring harness to isolate and repair cable faults.
  • Each time you add a sensor or move an actuator, you must change both data and power wiring appropriately, often resulting in network downtime until new connections are established.

The LPT-11 Link Power Transceiver can communicate at 78 kilobits per second for distances up to 500 meters in free topology and up to 2,200 meters in doubly terminated bus topology. Up to 128 devices can be supported on a single link power network segment. If you need to add more devices, link power segments may be interconnected by a router or a physical layer repeater.

The transceiver is compatible with the FT 3120 / FT 3150 Smart Transceivers and can communicate with each other in the same network. This offers an inexpensive way to interface to nodes whose current or voltage requirements would otherwise exceed the capacity of the link power segment.

The LPT-11 Link Power Transceiver also embeds an enhanced digital signal processing core that enables reliable communication in harsh environments. The LPT-11 can operate reliably in the presence of 10Vrms common mode noise typical in industrial and transportation environments. The transceiver is supplied in a compact single-in-line package (SIP), ideal for space-constrained applications.
