The Challenge

The Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg, Germany, is a busy passageway used by up to 150,000 vehicles a day. The tunnel’s operators wanted to reduce congestion and limit pollution, while lowering the tunnel's operating costs.

The Solution

The tunnel’s manual traffic-guidance system was replaced with an automated system, based on LonWorks technology, that uses surface lights to direct vehicles as they approach the tunnel. This optimizes traffic flow and reduces pollution.

Key Benefits

  • Reduces traffic congestion, and thus, CO2 emissions.
  • Gives tunnel crews a safe, real-time way to control traffic flow.
  • Reduced cabling requirements lowered installation costs and lessened structural impact.
